Tips for Exercising in Different Seasons

If you like exercising and keeping fit, you shouldn’t let the weather stop you from doing your favourite sport or form of exercise. However, different seasons require different exercise approaches and precautions to keep you safe. In this article, we look at tips for exercising in different seasons in the UK.

Spring

Spring is the perfect time to get outdoors and explore everything that nature has to offer. The weather is usually pleasant and mild enough that you won’t get too overheated when you exercise outside. Long walks are a great activity for the Spring months; you can explore new areas and see lots of different animals along the way. Running and participating in group sports activities can also be done outside in Spring. Just be sure to check the weather conditions before you plan your activities; you might need a light waterproof if rain is forecast or sun cream if the weather is hot and sunny. Spring weather can vary, so it’s best to check the forecast and be prepared for the weather to change.

Summer

The summers in the UK are getting warmer, which can make it more difficult to exercise outside without putting too much stress on your body. There will be days when the temperature is cooler, and you can enjoy the outdoors, but in the hottest part of the year, you may want to switch up your activities. Swimming is a great way to stay fit and keep cool in the summer, an open outdoor pool or safe body of water can be a great opportunity to test your swimming skills and keep up your exercise routine. If you prefer to exercise inside, choose a gym that’s fitted with air conditioning. This way, you can avoid overheating and putting too much stress on your body. Some athletes still choose to exercise outside in the summer months; if you are choosing this, make sure you are prepared for the effects the hot weather will have on your body. Wear sun protection that’s resistant to sweat and make sure you hydrate regularly; sports drinks are great for adding electrolytes back into your body as well as hydrating you in warm weather.

Autumn

When Autumn comes, your window for activity shortens, and there is less light in the day as the nights draw in. If you have time during the day or on the weekend, getting out on your bike can be a fantastic way to enjoy the colours and beauty of Autumn. Alternatively, you may choose to take your workouts inside a local gym or community centre. If you prefer to participate in team sports, you can hire out pitches that are lit up and suitable for playing in the dark. If you do exercise outside in Autumn when it begins to get dark, make sure you wear appropriate lighting to keep yourself safe. Running or cycling in the dark without lights and reflective clothing can be very dangerous for yourself and other people.

Winter

In the winter months, people often find their exercise routine becomes stale, and they struggle to find the motivation to keep going. To prevent this, plan ahead to winter and pair up with a buddy to keep you motivated. Skiing can also be a great way to fit in and exercise during the winter. Go on a ski trip with friends and family and explore other beautiful places around the world. If you want to stay at home and exercise, you can visit a local gym with heating or turn your living room into a home gym. Try to squeeze in at least a few exercise sessions per week during the winter months; this will help to keep up your level of fitness even when you feel like giving up. Always make sure you wrap up warm on your way to and from the gym, and if you’re planning to exercise outside, avoid icy areas and keep your body warm.

Exercise helps to keep your body fit and healthy, and it’s also great for your mental health. Using these tips above, you can continue your exercise routine throughout the year and stay active no matter what the weather.
